The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
