Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
