Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
