Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry
Pat Cummins has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
