EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
