A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
